North-West Offroad-Tour | Guided | Group | from Windhoek

Arid-Eden-Tour

On the Arid-Eden-Tour you will have the opportunity to escape from everyday life on adventure trails. Enjoy the lonely wilderness of the Damaraland and Kaokoveld, the endless view during the day and pure silence at night. Enjoy independent off-road driving in your own four-wheel drive vehicle and camping in enchanting places. This particular tour is especially close to my heart, as I have known this remote nature since the years 1998 and 1999, when I was on patrol there with the community game guards of the project Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation. The name of the tour refers to the legacy of Garth Owen-Smith, the founder of the conservation project, who wrote his autobiography about his life there in the Northwest in the book An Arid Eden. I had the chance myself, at Garth's invitation, to be a part of this groundbreaking conservation project and I would like to share that experience with my guests on this tour. Thanks to my local knowledge, you will always be safe, even if some trails are not marked on official maps (I also carry a satellite phone). The Arid-Eden-Tour is aimed at guests who are looking for a bit of adventure, but would not do such trips into the wilderness on their own. If you don't want to drive a car yourself, you are welcome to join me in my offroad vehicle. In any case, this tour is one you will remember forever.

Day 1

Arrival day in Windhoek

You will be transferred from the airport to your guesthouse in Windhoek. The “De Vagebond” guesthouse is located in the old and quiet district of Klein Windhoek. Since most flights arrive in Windhoek in the morning, you will have time in the afternoon to get to know the city a bit.

Day 2

Windhoek - Spitzkoppe

At the car rental in Windhoek you will get an introduction to the four-wheel drive car. Afterwards we will go for bulk shopping and each guest will be able to assemble his preferred food. Then after lunch we will drive to the famous Spitzkoppe where we will camp in the roof tent.

Day 3

Desolation Valley

Already at the beginning of the off-road tour you will get to know the untouched nature of the remote Damaraland, because we will move mostly on narrow 4×4 trails. The vast, deserted area in this region is absolutely impressive. Between us and the Atlantic Ocean there is nothing but mountains, hills, desert land and wild animals like zebras or springboks.

Day 4

Mowani Mountain Camp

First, we will drive along adventure trails next to the Doros Crater, where we will experience the typical landscape of the Damaraland. Then we will see Twyfelfontein with its petroglyphs before reaching the idyllically situated Mowani Mountain Camp in the afternoon. If you want to photograph the landscape characterized by boulders at sunset, it is best to climb the small mountain behind the camp.

Day 5

Palmwag

In the morning we will drive into the Huab River where we will probably see elephants. We will then move north out of the Huab via 4×4 trails and reach the oasis of Palmwag at the end. There are very good camping areas and even electricity from the socket. In the afternoon we will drive to the Palmwag Concession - a large nature reserve where you can see a lot of wildlife. In the evening we will have à la carte dinner at the restaurant, which is located right next to the Palmwag oasis.

Day 6

Purros

If you have always wanted to have the mystery of the fairy circles explained to you, this day is a good opportunity. For many years I have been investigating the fairy circles of the Giribes Plains, tens of thousands of which are found there and where we will pass right through. I will explain vividly how these circles are formed and also where the first fairy circle study was conducted there in the late 1970s. Later we will reach the Hoarusib where we will likely see elephants. Then we will reach the camp near Purros and a hill just above the river where we will enjoy the sunset.

Day 7

Marienfluss Valley

This day we will have a longer drive ahead of us. We will drive north via Orupembe, the Onjuva Plains, Joubert's Pass, into the picturesque Marienfluss Valley. At the end of the valley, we reach the Kunene River, in which it is not allowed to swim, because there are crocodiles. A shower awaits you at the camp, which is located near the river. From there you have a magnificent view of Angola.

Day 8

Skeleton Coast Region

The Marienfluss Valley is a dead end and so we go back. On this day we will also have time to visit the fairy circles in the Marienfluss. To avoid taking the same route over Joubert's Pass again, we will drive west over “Blue Drum” and then turn south near the Skeleton Coast. There we will camp in a dry riverbed, which is about the same latitude as the “Dunedin Star”, which sank on the coast in 1942. The sinking of this ship with 106 passengers triggered one of the largest rescue operations in southern Africa at that time and one can only imagine how difficult it was to venture there into the unknown Kaokoveld for the first time. Similar to the third night in the wild Damaraland, this overnight stay in absolute isolation will be a highlight of the adventure trip.

Day 9

Opuwo Country Lodge

Now we will drive via Orupembe through the remote backcountry towards Etanga. We will see abandoned kraals and maybe a Himba or two. We will also pass striking baobab trees that look as if they are growing with their roots upwards. Then we will reach Opuwo, a small town where there is good shopping. After all the nights in the roof tent, we will now enjoy the beautiful ambience of the Opuwo Country Lodge, which is located high up on the mountain and offers a fantastic view and pool. In addition to very good food, there will be a well-deserved bed for a change this night and the roof tent may remain folded.

Day 10

Epupa Falls

From Opuwo we head north to the Angolan border. There you will find the beautiful Epupa waterfalls, whose rising spray creates a magical atmosphere, especially when backlit. We will camp directly on the river near the falls and enjoy the sunset.

Day 11

Kunene River Lodge

In the morning we will visit the waterfalls again, because then the backlight with the spray is especially beautiful. Afterwards you will get to know the local Himba people. During a visit to the Himba village you will experience the culture and customs of these nomads. Afterwards you will drive further east along the Kunene River to camp at the Kunene River Lodge on the river.

Day 12

Namutoni - Etosha

Today we will take a longer drive via Ruacana Falls to the southeast. We will travel through Ovamboland to the eastern border of Etosha Park to spend the night at Fort Namutoni. We are guaranteed to see animals at the waterhole there.

Day 13

Okaukuejo - Etosha

On the drive west along the salt pan we will pass many waterholes where you will see all the game of Etosha Park. In between we will have a break in Halali to reach Okaukuejo in the afternoon. In the evening we will sit at the illuminated waterhole and watch in absolute silence the approach of giraffes, rhinos and other game.

Day 14

Waterberg

Now we slowly head back south after visiting some waterholes in the morning. In order not to arrive too fast in the city life of Windhoek again, we make a stop at the Waterberg. The Waterberg is, similar to Etosha, a protected area, because the animals can live undisturbed up here on the plateau.

Day 15

Windhoek

On the last day of our adventure trip, we will drive back to the national capital. In Okahandja you can buy souvenirs at the famous wood market or the typical biltong at the butcher. In the afternoon we will drop off the cars in Windhoek and end the trip in the evening with a cozy get-together at Joe's Beerhouse.

Day 16

Departure day from Windhoek

Since most return flights only start in the evening, the last day can be spent relaxing. Before you are brought to the airport, there are thus still one or the other opportunity to shop or simply relax.
